Learning through doing

To utilise the downtime caused by the pandemic, various departments of Aravind-Tirunelveli organised a series of subject-based exhibitions to facilitate cross learning as well as to make all staff aware of the functions of each department. The exhibitions were organised by departments such as Pharmacy, Out-patient services, Instruments Maintenance, Microbiology and Biochemistry labs. Allied ophthalmic personnel actively took part creating charts and models pertaining to their area of work.

Motivational session for staff children

For the first time ever, Aravind-Tiruneveli organised a motivational session for the staff and their children who were preparing for board exams. Mr R Ganesh, Founder - Life Improvement through Mind Engineering handled the session in an interesting and engaging way on December 19. Tips for good parenting were also shared during the session.

Food carnival

Staff of Aravind-Tirunelveli joined hands and organised a food carnival on June 16 to raise funds to contribute to the Chief Minister’s Covid relief fund. Healthy food items like salads, sweets made of cereals, millet steam cake, boiled peanuts, papaya and sundal varieties were put on sale.  Fresh juice was also included to beat the heat and quench the thirst. There was an overwhelming response for the carnival and the team was able to raise Rs, 14,450.

Hands-on training for staff

The training was held for the staff of Aravind-Tuticorin, Kovilpatti and 17 vision centres on July 25, as part of the Seva- funded Systematic Paediatric Eye Care through Sibling Screening Strategies Project.  Each centre was provided with a kit containing the necessary items for training like RAF ruler, prism bar, Pen torch, accommodation target, occluder and accommodation flipper.

CME on patient safety goals

The CME was organised for the staff members of Aravind-Tirunelveli and was conducted in two batches during May 27-28.  Dr.R.Ramakrishnan set the context for the CME by explaining patient safety and its significance. Senior medical consultants explained about the ten patient safety goals.  Citing a few incidents of near miss happened in the recent past, they made the sessions very informative and also shared tips to avoid such instances in future.

The main purpose of the CME held on December 12 was to provide staff an opportunity to update their knowledge on specialty eye conditions. The CME also helped them update their knowledge on the latest technology used in diagnosis and management of eye diseases. About 95 staff members took part.

Angaadi 2021

Angaadi, the great charity fest was organised for the first time at Aravind-Tirunelveli on October 29 and 30. Items on sale included new and unused ones and were sold at a nominal price. Food courts with delicacies prepared in-house turned out to be an excellent treat. Proceeds from the sales of items were donated to charity.

Developments

Expansion of Facility

At Aravind-Tirunelveli, space constraint has always been an issue. With the  patient numbers growing year after year, it became imperative for the hospital to relocate its out-patient services and operation theatres to a new building. Construction is underway and the new complex is expected to open in October 2022. Along with this, a comfortable housing facility for the staff is also coming up in the same premises.
