Making a difference in the lives of the visually challenged
AI driven smart vision spectacles incorporated with features like navigation, face recognition and text reading will now help people with visual impairment lead an independent life. This was developed by Smart Health Global (SHG) Technologies with support from Vision Aid and iterative inputs and validation from Aravind. Aravind Eye Care System in collaboration with Rotary Club introduced this device which is the first indigenous product of its kind in the country at a function organised at LAICO on August 16. Five visually impaired persons received the smart vision spectacles free of cost at the function.

Aravind-Madurai in collaboration with the NGOs, Vision Aid and Trees for Life has embarked on a project to distribute smartphones to visually impaired students and job-seekers from underprivileged communities. The smartphone will be beneficial for students to undergo online classes and for job-seekers, it will help in better networking and easy correspondences to find a placement. At a function held at Aravind-Madurai on January 4, smartphones were distributed to ten deserving visually impaired persons. These beneficiaries were trained on the efficient use of smartphone using assistive mobile apps to overcome the challenges they face in day-to-day life. An online training session by the Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Illinois, USA was also arranged to familiarise them on the usage of smart phones.

New Vision Centres
Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai opened two new vision centres, one at Viralimalai and another one at Sayalkudi on August 18 and March 31 respectively. Viralimalai centre is sponsored by Mrs. Kripa and family, a long-term friend of Aravind. SEVA - Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) Seeing is Believing project sponsored the Sayalkudi centre.

Webinar - Conquering complex cataracts - The MSICS way
Cataract and IOL Services, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai organised the webinar for budding surgeons aspiring to perform complex cataract surgeries. A total of 212 participants from India and 20 overseas ophthalmologists took part. The participants were awarded with 0.5 CME credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.

Vitrectomy workshop
The workshop conducted on November 12-13 was organised for operation theatre nurses to brief them on the importance of anterior vitrectomy, its management and the features in vitrectomy machines.

Phaco development workshop
Cataract and IOL Services, Aravind-Madurai in association with Alcon conducted phaco development workshop for MS residents on November 26-27. A total of 15 residents took part.

IOL loading workshop
Cataract and IOL Services, Aravind-Madurai conducted a workshop for operation theatre nurses on December 10 and 11 to improve their IOL loading skills. A total of 63 participants took part.

Celebrating Manohar Devadoss
Aravind’s association with the eminent artist-writer, Mr.Manohar Devadoss started over a decade ago and blossomed into a unique friendship. He has always been a great supporter of Aravind and has instituted an endowment in memory of his late and beloved wife, Mahema to support people with low vision. It was truly a gratifying moment for Aravind when the Postal Department, in commemoration of the Postal Week, released a set of postcards carrying Manohar’s intricate sketches that showed the great city of Madurai, its buildings and landscape in the 1950s on October 12.

Learning through doing
A week-long exhibition was organised by the first year allied ophthalmic personnel (AOP) in the second week of July. The exhibits included working models, 3-Dmodels, charts, layouts of different departments etc and were widely acclaimed by all.
To evaluate AOP's competency level and give them an opportunity to brush up their knowledge, a quiz was conducted at Aravind-Madurai on November 26. A total of 415 MLOPs took the quiz and from this, the best 30 performers were selected for the final round.The participants took part in teams and the winners were awarded.

Online Training on NABH entry level standards
The training was conducted from May 18-21 for the paramedics across the Aravind centres. Every session was evaluated by a daily quiz. Fifty MLOPs from across Aravind Eye Hospitals, three from LAICO and around 20 participants from Joseph Eye Hospital participated.

Angaadi 2022
Angaadi, the great charity fest was organised at Aravind-Madurai, probably the first mass event in the hospital post Covid crisis. Apart from the regular stalls, the highlight this time was the exhibition-cum-sale of artworks and photographs by eminent artists and staff. Angaadi was able to raise Rs. 1,50,000 which was equally distributed to three charity organisations in Madurai – Blessed Kids Special School, Padikkattugal and Adaikkalam Old Age Home.
Eye care librarians meet
Aravind Library and Information Centre – Madurai organised a Zoom meeting of eye care librarians in India on December 17. The objective was to discuss ideas to conduct similar meetings and journal club discussions periodically for eye care librarians.The meeting was headed by Ms. Pamela C Sieving from California USA. A total of 15 librarians from 7 institutions joined the meet and shared their experiences on how they overcame the challenges in offering service during the pandemic.
Aravind-Dindigul all set to move to a new facility
Since the opening of Aravind Eye Hospital at Dindigul in a rented building, in 2010, there has been a robust growth in patient volumes, year after year, creating an acute space crunch. Anticipating this, a plot of land had been purchased and a spacious, well-designed hospital is being built for providing better care and ambience to the patients and staff. This new facility is getting ready and will be opened in July 2022.
